Airventure 2016 Day 8

A morning storm that hung over the airport for what seemed like hours prevented us from getting an early start.

We ended up starting up just after 11am and there was quite a conga line of airplanes trying to get out. Our taxi was a good 30 minutes long. Yikes! Jim Piavas (RV-7) joined Darin and I for the flight home.

Unfortunately our flight was pretty short and we had to land at Portage, WI to wait for the weather to improve. It sucked to stop so soon but it was great to be out of Oshkosh before the airshow TFR.

We weren't the only ones. Kind of funny watching pilots looking at the weather and wondering who is going to go first. (Ourselves included)

We walked to lunch and then were able to take off about 2 and 1/2 hours after we landed.

We had to stay at around 2000ft for quite awhile.

Our route ended up crossing Northern Iowa. It was very scenic and relatively cool.

The further West we got the more it improved.

We stopped in Aberdeen, SD for fuel.

Jim Piavas was pretty spent and decided to get a hotel for the night in Aberdeen. Darin and I pressed on for Dickinson, ND to visit his sister.

Dickinson Airport

I spent the night in Darin's sister's camp trailer. Man it was confortable and I slept like a baby.
